How to find out the maximum amount of one stick of memory that a computer can support?

1) How can I find out the maximum amount of one stick of memory that a computer can support?
2) Is it true that the maximum amount of RAM supported by a computer is divided into slots?
For example: if a computer with 2 slots for RAM supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, then a maximum of 4 GB of RAM can be installed in one slot?
