You can set the 3D Cursor as the Transform Pivot Point, and choose any position for it, incl. one of the faces of your object.
If you press X, Y or Z after S, it will only drag along the selected axis.
Or, conversely, you can exclude one axis Shift + X (Y, Z)
You can move the pivot to the cursor (put the cursor on the extreme point). After that, the increase in the object will occur from this point.
