How to effectively learn new tools?

Everyone at work has to learn a new toolkit, often in a short amount of time. What is your approach to learning new tools (IDE, framework - it doesn't matter), are there any effective methods for maximum performance and fewer errors when learning?

The most effective approach is to start actively using the new tool. Reading manuals and passive study does not help.

The best way to learn a new tool is by doing some kind of live project.
Ideally - when there is someone to ask live.
If not - google %name% how to %task%
