How to dynamically change desktop background on Raspberry Pi via script?

I edit .config files in the ~/.config/pcmanfm/LXDE/ directory, but the wallpaper does not change. Why? Is there a command that refreshes/reloads the desktop, or some other way to change the desktop background programmatically?

pcmanfm --set-wallpaper=/etc/alternatives/desktop-background
