There is a desire to write a program based on Arduino, Intel Edison, RaspberryPi so that it solves important social problems. For example, for the sick, wounded, disabled and ordinary people. What matters is the social significance. I'd love to hear any ideas.

A road traffic automation project would be socially significant, when a device installed in a car allows you to identify it at a distance, find out its speed, coordinates, indication of turn signals, and the state of the pedals.
At the proper level - it would make the car slow down when the red light turns on (receiving data from the traffic light) or inform other road users about an uncontrolled car on the road - forcing the traffic light to switch (if it is impossible to influence the car).
Such a project will soon be created (5 ... 10 years) - everyone will be required to install such a device in their car. Toyota is already developing in this direction.
There are many options for this device from a simple transfer of coordinates and the state taken from the brains of the engine, to an autopilot system.
The essence of the project is in radio-frequency data exchange between traffic participants (peer to peer network).
Hardware: microcomputer with 4...8 radio modems (to ensure operation on multiple channels and redundancy), GPS + Glonas receiver, Accelerometer. Modem frequency 825 ... 875 MHz (requires coordination with the radio frequency center), External devices for informing the driver (sound, light indication, additionally displaying a map with traffic participants)
Software part: must work with devices and build a virtual model of traffic within a certain radius - catch dangerous intersections (at intersections, when overtaking).
About the car ... well, except for one thing. No management interference. The car is a means of increased danger and the decision of the driver is often illogical but saving. Sometimes only the gas on a red saves a car with passengers from being hit in the side by an overly impatient participant in the cross-flow, but what about stopping on the railway. moving due to the disagreement of the arduino or its breakdown?
