How to detect screen touches in Android?

Actually how to do it right?
I found the root layout on the activity as a view and hung an heir on it with OnTouchListener with the onTouch() method. It fires, but only on ACTION_DOWN. And I wanted to intercept other events in order to display the line on the screen.
What am I doing wrong?
