How to create your own messenger based on telegram or signal open source?

Good day. The other day I became very interested in how to make my messenger based on the open source code of another messenger? I'm not going to do something massive, purely for knowledge. I already have the source code for the signal messenger. Installed on GitHub and don't understand what to do, where to start? If anyone knows about this, I'd love to hear it :-)

The code of the client part of such products is laid out in order to show the absence of bookmarks in it, to give the opportunity to modify the client part , for educational purposes.
If you want to develop your own, taking a client with gh - you will have to recreate the server part only according to the description of the client procedures for interacting with it, which is why the idea immediately seems rotten, don't you think so?

it's better to do everything from scratch. Directly each line to figure out. Well, maybe the functions can be copied from somewhere as much as possible. It will be more interesting than figuring out tens of thousands of lines of third-party application code.
I myself plan to do the messenger. Only first under the telegram client. Then yours.
