How to create an auction?

I want to write a simple auction script. Required functionality: adding, deleting, changing a lot; sending an e-mail message after the end of the auction; AJAX ; Well, actually, at least some kind of security. ;)
Tell me where to start? And what is the best way to implement this?

Start with diagrams on paper. When you understand how it will work, make a database and write code.
