How to connect to the server correctly?

How do you connect to the server?
Now I'm connecting via ssh as root. They say it's not true. Need keys.
Keys under the root or under the root do not need to connect at all?
It is clear that you can do anything, you are interested in how people do it.

Do not connect as root, it is better to create a separate user for SSH, remove root from openssh altogether
