Yes, you can, if the points lie sequentially on the same line.
If the points lie on different objects, then you will have to connect them in pairs.
In your case there are 3 separate lines and you are connecting without inserting a new segment. So the tool can only connect 2 nodes, and only end nodes. Except in pairs, there is no other method in Inkscape to connect several nodes that lie on different objects into one.
