Use any externally powered USB hub, or you need an externally powered drive box.

I just had a similar problem, a Toshiba disk with usb 3.0, it has 1A in its characteristics, the raspberry was connected via a 1A power supply, after it was connected via 2.5A everything started up, it’s not clear yet how this will affect the raspberry itself, it will have to pass 1A + another 0.5 through yourself.
