How to combine colors in interfaces?

Modern design trends are multiple gradients and multi colors.
What principles do you follow when combining multiple colors?
Or please post a link to some interesting articles on this subject.
I'm interested in understanding the process or variations of the processes for creating multiple colors or gradients.

If hype - then paint with a rainbow. If true - maximum 5 colors of one field of berries:
1 color: for the main content;
2 optional;
3 auxiliary;
4 menus, navigation, icons, buttons;
5 links, highlights, accents.
*All emphasis on typography, use all sorts of other artistic mediums and avoid ostentation in color.
