How do I differentiate between button position (on/off) in alerts (notifications) settings?

What is strange - neither in the "green" nor in the "gray" position, no notifications and new mail appeared (with the exception of the "I like" notification, but I managed to get confused only after it arrived).

Green - active, gray - not active. Notifications about comments, changes to a question, a mark about a solution, comments to a question, answers - come only when you subscribe to a question - there is a + to the right of the question title.
Alerts about “likes” and personal contact through @user always come, regardless of whether you are subscribed to the question or not.
