How to choose host folder on github pages?

I started learning git and ran into this problem: there is a src (source) and dist (working) folder, and when I try to put it on the host, it says "404 File not found"
I found a mention of a certain Git Subtree, but what is it and how to use it, what would solve my problem? Or perhaps there is another way to solve it?
