Rails what is the best way to version a project?

There is a project on RoR. Prompt how it is better to lead its version automatically. Maybe there is some kind of gem. I would like that when committing to github, the version increased and was registered in a specific project file. Is it possible to automate this project, or will you have to constantly edit it by hand?

git hooks. I haven't used it myself, but it seems to be exactly what you need.
