I took an order for a new design of an online store, found a suitable template. But it needs to be checked and finalized, how it will look like a site with a new template, without affecting its work on the hosting. Maybe there are test modes or something like that?

A more reliable option is to make a test copy of the working site and already experiment with it.
A less correct option is to look directly at the working site.
To do this, drop the template into the templates folder. Next, in the site settings, add this template.
The condition for applying the template can be set, for example:
