How to change the background of a picture?

There is an icon, for example black. I need to make it red, I'll use the fill tool. Unfortunately, after it, the borders of the icon are clearly defined, there is no previous smoothness. How do you do contour smoothing?

with such a selection-fill will not get adequate edges if the edges are not hard.
A more adequate way to recolor single-color (especially black and white) images is the following - double-click on the layer (it should not be locked / background) , Color overlay and select the desired color.
If the picture with a gradient is within the limits of saturation/brightness of one cent, then you can try to use blend mode not normal, but hue or mb color, but with a gradient, for example, black/white, it will most likely be incorrect and, perhaps, it would be better to use in this case, not a Color overlay, but a manually configured Gradient overlay (I don’t remember if it is in the 6th fsh, but it definitely is in ss) .
In general, our one-color picture is calmly repainted exactly in the desired color without dancing with a tambourine.
In some cases, the Color replacement tool (it is in the same group as the brush and pencil) or Image > Adjustments > Replace color can help.
In general, it is necessary to look at which method is suitable for a particular case.

1. CTRL/CMND + Click on the icon layer.
2. The correct selection of the shape will be created.
3. Create a new empty layer
4. On a new layer, fill this selection with the desired color.
5. Profit!

CTRL/CMD + ALT + U will bring up the hue/saturation tool and you can play around with the sliders there.
