How to build your own linux distribution?

Lately I've been thinking about building my own linux distribution. Although, no, it would be more correct to say your Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora/etc. That is, put the necessary software there, configure everything as you want, cut out the unnecessary. It is desirable that the image could be run directly from a USB flash drive, such a portable workplace. Tell me which way to dig.
PS wise men like

go to kernel.org

or advising LFS, don't even post here.

An image is not needed. Linux is installed on a flash drive in a regular way, like on any other block device.
Debian answer: Simple-CDD .

I used Remastersys, for Debian-based, and now it seems to be already there. Latest for Ubuntu 12.04
