How to build a linux image for diskless boot?

The question arose of how to make an image in the first place, which would:
- Boot already pre-installed, like Ubuntu when you choose to just try and not install, or like a live-cd from gentoo. Only without x-s
- Loading into memory, saving logs or configs is unnecessary.
As I see it, it does not matter from the media or through pxe, the download occurs, and you get a console with a login and password. All. The rest is a matter of technique.

Your LiveCD. It's obvious.
Distributor - to taste. There are, for example, Debian tools for such a custom build for your needs.

It might be easier for you to install LTSP:

(checked - ltsp-server-standalone is present in 15.10)

On debian-based systems, this is done using the casper package . Actually it is used by most live-images.
Well, loading a console instead of X is a matter of the presence or absence of packages and claims in your system, you will always have a console if you don’t spoil the init subsystem with experiments.
