How to add a new branch to github and not break another project?

There is a shared project on github (from a mentor). We make our projects on the basis of its backbone. You need to create your own branch on the same repository and upload the project. At the end it will merge into 1 project.

By creating your own branch, you won't break anything for anyone. Problems may arise at the merger stage, but since we do not know anything about the project and it is not known how this merger will occur, nothing can be said on this topic.
