Gitolite and chown file?

Set up gitolite on FreeBSD. Everything works great.
When a remote developer pushes to gitolite's repository, I hook up a script that goes to the website's repository and polls the gitolite's repository so that the changes made are displayed on the website.
There is one bug, the owner of the file, changes in which were made to become root. Tried to do chown -R : /path/to/website - but without success.
