How to access the Database via SSH/SFTP?

Given:
1. there is a site with SFTP access on joomla
2. in configuration.php host = localhost
Is it possible to get to the database somehow?
Perhaps some kind of SHH client?
Never used SHH before...

go to the server via ssh (if, of course, it allows), then
in the mysql console -u username -p password
