Career in IT
Anton, 2015-07-12 21:52:01

How stupid is the decision to drop everything and start a new IT career in a metropolis?

Good day! Not so long ago, a thought dawned on me: why not drop everything right now, move to the city where you always wanted to live and find your dream job, why not?
The last year, while studying at the university, I also had an internship in a web-studio in a relatively small city. I’ll write right away that you won’t find a better vacancy for any programmer in the city. The company specializes in the development of online stores and other projects, a cheerful and professional team, ample opportunities for growth. At the moment I am engaged in maintaining and finalizing sites on cms bitrix + PHP (back-end). I won’t say that I succeeded greatly in this: at the very least I cope with average tasks, but I haven’t grown up to the development of an online store from scratch. Zar. the fee is about 16 thousand rubles.
The problem is perspective. What can I achieve there? Salary increase. fees in ~5 thousand rubles. every half a year (the limit, I think, will be about 35-40k) + the skills of "riveting" online stores on bitrix ... The last skill is now quite in demand on the market and well paid. In fact, this is very cool, you get a quick return on the work done, but you want something more significant, important. I would like to get away from pipeline development and commerce forever, and if you are engaged in the web, then the development of complex services, although you need to grow up to them. There is a strong desire to create, to create, but I don’t think that in this job it will be possible to the full extent, I honestly don’t give a damn about money (so as not to starve too much and have a place to live), the main thing is to solve interesting problems, develop, so that later I can solve even more interesting and exciting tasks,
To the point:
The other day I received a bachelor's degree, majoring in mathematics. Due to this event, I thought about moving. The essence of the problem is that knowledge and skills, except for Php + Bitrix and a little Html, Css, Jquery, JS, Ajax + little experience in deploying and setting up projects in linux, almost no ability to work with git. Python at the level of the completed codeacademy course; C++, C# at the level of writing student labs. A thought flutters in my head, well expressed by one of the local respondents: "you either somehow get out of your regional hole, or it buries you there forever" and it seems that it will be so.
As for moving and leaving work, in principle, I decided, I'll take a chance. But there is a problem with finding a job and choosing a direction. It's not entirely clear what vacancies to look for if it's not web-based and you don't have any experience in other endeavors. Is it even possible to find something similar? Here is such a dilemma, I want to leave, but there is nowhere :)

Of the popular areas: Frontend (NodeJs, RIA SPA, RealTime App, Isomorphic) - In Moscow, in St. Petersburg, they dream of finding a normal specialist from 100k salary). Java (Big Data, Machine Learning, Java EE (Hibernate JPA (WEB), Processing (Activity), Playframework, Spring, GlassFish) - In Moscow Middle Developer from 100k. C++ (OpenGL, OpenCL, System programming, networks, optimization) from 100k.
What is the actual question? Have you looked at the market? HH.RU? Why use PHP, which is 60% used in online stores, social networks, sites?
If there is a mathematical base, then you can calmly deal with graphics, process modeling, you need it mainly (Linear algebra, discrete mathematics, trigonometry, numerical methods). Moreover, this knowledge will also help in the development of interpreters, compilers (Add the theory of sets, series, Boolean algebra), used by PL (C, C ++). So in general, you can go as an intern at a research institute of some kind from 60-80k. Again, if everything is okay with mathematics, then this is a direct road to the experience of using and analyzing algorithms, data structures at a very good level, sports programming opens up for you.
I think you are not in a hurry to take risks, try, study and do not know your own worth. First of all, you need to deal with these issues and learn how to evaluate information on your own and make bold adult decisions based on it.
For example, I have similar thoughts about Silicon Valley, GameDev. I sit studying mathematics, language, the market, companies that may be potential employers in the future, the laws of the country, the labor market, I read books about how to pass an interview for the position of a C ++ engineer. And I'm not thinking about a salary of 100k rubles a month, but 100k kilobaches a year. But I am in no hurry to act, since there is a family, it will also have to be led along. As long as you don’t have family restrictions, I advise you not to hesitate, but to strengthen your life, civic position, get interesting experience and solve problems yourself at home, and not wait until you come to the company and you will come up with an interesting task for interesting money.

A small comfortable city is a million times better than some Moscow. And earnings do not depend on where you are - freelancing is the same.

First you need to find a job, and then go, or go broke in an apartment, or get a job as a seller / security guard to pay for an apartment while you are looking for a job and you will get stuck in it.
Big cities can bury just as well as small ones, here everyone becomes a cog with rare exceptions, and the benefit in money is usually eaten up by rent and more expensive entertainment.
I think you correctly decided that you need to go, go, try, just keep in mind ...

In fact, in my city they also pay in web studios, and the city is a megalopolis. After 3 months they promise 40k (well, well).
I went to freelancing, I earn 50-70k, but I need to be enterprising, look for clients, it doesn’t bother me at all, even a thrill + an account is pumped on the stock exchange, then it will work for me - this is about prospects.
Therefore, I don’t see the point of leaving for a big city (in my case, it’s Moscow-Peter), on the contrary, I plan to leave for a small one, where the environment is better, the water is cleaner and, accordingly, the products are of high quality + cheaper, and you can also save decently.

It's better to try something and fail than to sit and sour in a safe swamp. :-)
Regarding work, I want to say that it is not so important what language you program in, how important it is what tasks you solve. Learning the syntax of a new language and framework methods is a matter of a couple of months. Therefore, focus on what tasks you can solve, how good code you write, whether you understand the tasks of the business area (and this is a rare and important skill), how clearly you express your thoughts. And it will not be difficult to relearn from php to another language.
Of course, you should look for a job where there will be a challenge - tasks that develop you. I'm afraid that Bitrix riveting skills will only come in handy in the context of Bitrix.

Man, I read your text and it's like I'm writing it myself. Now I'm just entering the university for applied mathematics, but I completely leave my family, I'm going to obviously go where I don't know anyone, where I didn't plan to. Just to pump or break. Education itself does not interest me as such.
I'm talking about - go to another city, go to one where it will be more difficult. There you will either become stronger and things will go uphill or you will break. Everything will depend on you. In a small town, you will rot, that's for sure.
As for work, you sweat a lot. Do your thing right now. Find a small source of income (if you are not particularly interested in money) and do your own thing.
In general, write to me [email protected] . Let's chat.
