How many levels of nesting can a sitemap.xml have?

sitemap.xml can be split into multiple files.

I want to make the sitemap.xml list files, each of which lists files that will already list the final pages of the site.
Is it possible?

In my experience, I have not seen this. But, I'm sure, of. sources would give info on such a possibility, if it were.
