How long do external HDDs with routers live with constant use?
Transcend TS500GSJ25M2 - external HDD 2.5" 500GB with USB interface. I use DLNA Samba for FTP and downloads. Constantly warm and spinning without stopping Asus RT-N66U router, stock firmware. I'm a little scared that it constantly works and spins the disk.

On the contrary, as far as I know, the main load is at the start and stop. Personally, my old Seagate 320 gig has been spinning since 2008 (with rare stops for service / moving) and, it seems, does not intend to die yet. Of the dangers - to drop such a spinning hard, otherwise it will definitely work out its 5 years after which it will be retired (most likely by that time it will be completely irrelevant due to the final arrival of the SSD era)
This should not be scary, on the contrary - in this mode there will be no problems with parking heads. I recommend looking for a smartclt drain, well, or look from a computer
The optimal working temperature of the HDD is 35-40 degrees, the maximum is 65 degrees, after which the probability of breakdown increases. So it will be warm in any way. And to turn the disk - it has such a purpose.
My external drive is hooked up not to the router, but to the media player - all sorts of stuff is poured into it over the network, that is, it also works all the time (in idle time). Warm, but for the past three years - no problems.
The external Seagate worked for 3 years, it was always connected and did not touch or turn off, after a while it stopped being displayed, there was a terrible crunch inside the hard, I gave it to the s / c, after the diagnosis I was told that "You missed it" and data recovery is impossible, I was at a loss.
