How is the hourly rate work?

I want to switch to remote work. I plan to work not on a fixed, but on an hourly basis. Who has experience, tell me how it goes? What are the pitfalls? How is payment made, how is the calculation of hours by the customer himself? Or does he take his word for it?

Lol, no one will take your word for it. Usually monitoring software is installed.
Almost like in the office, only here they will really monitor.

It's customary on Upwork to use their program, which will count the hours and take a screenshot every 10 minutes.
Outside of Upwork, everyone counts the hours however they want. Someone on a notepad. I love toggl service.
Naturally, everything is built on trust. The number of hours should correspond to the expectation of the customer and some adequate norm. If there are a lot of hours, then you should be able to explain them.
Pitfalls - how to count non-working hours? Toilet, reading documentation, discussion with friends, 10-minute breaks. Here everyone decides for himself.

I think in Toggle.
I do an evaluation before a project. The experience is great, so the error is usually 10-20% of the estimate, provided that the task has not changed dramatically.
Thus, the client understands how much the work will cost approximately and understands the value of his comments and changes to the task.
There has never been any controversy about this. I guess I just never abuse trust.

make it a rule to record your labor costs by tasks and provide customers with timesheets. you can also draw up sheets of requirements in which you will record the planned assessment of work.
