How is it more logical to install Linux on SDD + HDD in parallel with Windows?
Good day to all. The conditions of the task are as follows: there is a laptop with a 128 GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD. Win10 is preinstalled on the SSD. Next you need to install Linux (in my case, Manjaro). All according to the classics, as it were, push Windows, / boot, / , / home on the SSD, all media (music, etc.) on the HDD. But the question arises: how much space should be cut off under Manjaro? After all, Linux installs all packages by default in / usr, which is also on the SSD, with this method the place will quickly run out there. Is there an option to put all such partitions on the HDD, with the exception of /boot for fast boot? I know there won't be any performance gains then, but I just want Manjaro to load quickly. There are options?

Windows itself is not averse to devour the place. at the same time, it is much more sensitive to the speed of the carrier. also do not forget that for dozens of semi-annual updates, you need decently free space, 20-30 GB is desirable to have free
my choice - Linux on hard. evicted mint 19 xfce completely on hard (gave half the terik) and is happy as an elephant. and win10 now operates 2 ssds - 180 system and software, which is difficult to reassign the installation location (such as office, studio), and 120, where the rest of the software lives, and where all user folders are linked (by the way, there are a number of signs that this is me slept from their loss, when rolling 1810;)) (although it’s still a habit to make a backup every day for many years)
UEFI or legacy? GPT or MBR? You need to dance from here.
If legacy + MBR, then there should be no problems with Win. You partition the SSD under Win - one partition, the other partition under the Win bootloader. It is also possible two/three under Manjaro: one under / and the second under home - it is desirable. In this case, when reinstalling, you will save your data and settings in home. The third section under swap - if needed. If the RAM is greater than 4 GB and you don't compile software for hours, then swap is unnecessary.
With UEFI, you will need a partition of ~ 400 MB for boot / efi - everything will be loaded from here.
Music and all other data can be stored on the HDD as a separate non -Linux partition. Just create a partition on the HDD with some kind of HTFS to be able to access it with Win and Lin. In Manjaro, mount it like a regular partition.
I also have an SSD+HDD, but without Windows and UEFI+GPT. The disks are partitioned as follows:
//SSD
Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/sdb1 2048 780287 778240 380M EFI System - загрузчик boot/efi для UEFI
/dev/sdb2 780288 63694847 62914560 30G Linux filesystem - корень openSUSE
/dev/sdb3 63694848 105637887 41943040 20G Linux filesystem - home openSUSE
/dev/sdb4 105637888 168552447 62914560 30G Linux filesystem - корень Debian 10
/dev/sdb5 168552448 207613951 39061504 18,6G Linux filesystem - home Debian 10
// HDD
Device Start End Sectors Size Type
/dev/sda1 2048 164194303 164192256 78,3G Linux filesystem - раздел с backup-ом
/dev/sda5 164194304 993224703 829030400 395,3G Linux filesystem - раздел с данными с ФС ext4, т.к у меня нет Win
Can't you use the Linux subsystem on Windows? Well, it's just a rather convenient thing, albeit damp.
I have a similar situation: 512 GB sdd, on which Windows 10! Added hdd to 1tb and Linux on it entirely! Sdd only split into disks and I touch more, because. there is a recovery section on it, it saved me several times! Yes, I have uefi!
