In theory, such a solution is not visible to search engines, but you need to see the pages in the index to tell for sure.
If half of the page content is not visible to search engines, then the site will be filtered for attempting to manipulate search engines.
This technique is convenient to use in linking to hide some of the technical end-to-end links that are not useful for SEO. But I wouldn't recommend getting carried away.
