How does it work and how to set up a Wi-Fi repeater?

I have an Asus RT-N16 router (with firmware from enthusiasts), which is on the balcony, and therefore the Wi-Fi connection in the apartment is not very good. I decided to install an old D-link DIR-320 (with DD-WRT firmware) as a Wi-Fi repeater. But a few questions arose -
1) Will D-link take a Wi-Fi signal and transmit it further? Or, if you plug a cable into it, will it receive a signal through it, and then distribute it like Wi-Fi?
2) Asus has IP 192.168.1.1, D-link has 192.168.1.2. The second one also has DHCP Forwarding configured (on Asus). From a computer connected to D-link, D-link's web interface is available. From a computer connected to Wi-Fi, no. Why?

1) Yes, it's better with a cable, since a pure repeater immediately loses half the speed.
2) Switch to AP access point mode and all no settings. Why do you need 2 routers, let the second only distribute Wi-Fi, do not complicate your life.
