How does copyright work in computer games?

This time I will not write in a veiled way, but the direct truth, I hope this will help clarify everything in detail. I ask you not to throw tomatoes, although I have not noticed this for this resource yet. I'll start with myself, if anyone is not interested, skip the second paragraph.
I'm thinking of practicing game design and, if possible, going into that field. I have time for this, since I can do something in 3d modeling (I was fond of 3d max until the trial burned out for a couple of years) and backend development (in which I already have experience of piecework work), both features can be sold on the Internet . As a last resort, I live in Moscow, where there is work, there are no "problems of small suburbs". So I have time to master. I myself graduate in a year from the university with a degree in software engineering. In addition, I have more than 11 years of experience as an avid gamer with 4 years of zadrotstvo disease, including, mainly in mmorpg, a little less in rpg, there were other genres.
To enter the gaming industry as a game designer, you traditionally need a sacrifice to Kumamon, or at least provide some finished work in the form of a portfolio. You can make a bunch of seeds, or you can make one something fun. I am attracted to the second, for the fan. And my victim will be mmorpg RF Online, more precisely, mmorpg. From RFO, it is planned to take the setting, three races, their classes, the first 2 specializations and features and CV (race war for resources), and change the art from a bright cartoon to 3d anime, the pumping system towards Skyrim (just newer and more exciting), which has been hanging in my head for a long time (I couldn’t accept that the game was without a plot, and came up with it myself, looking around), fully replace all but three with NPS characters (only those who played RFO will understand this: specialty merchants, quests will be given by the system on behalf of the current government and heroes, who will be present in the game in the form of mayors of the general staff (heroes cannot be replaced, they participate in the plot)), expand the variety of specializations from 2 to 8 and turn the CV from massacre into chess (one specialization beats another). Implementation in Unity3D simply because I'm not interested in creating an engine. Is this enough to call the game a game based on RF Online, or will you have to change all the names and carefully deny the obvious relationship?

copyright goes to the content (models, textures, sounds, dialogues, graphics). images of heroes including, but names probably. The copyright does not apply to the plot, gameplay, setting. it’s just that if you do it one-on-one, then you will always be compared with them, and the comparison due to the quality of the implementation will most likely not be in your favor.
in any case, if you make your own full-fledged game, it will take you a lot of time to work on content.
