Career in IT
devastation_kvlt, 2016-03-17 21:49:29

How do you combine IT with other interests?

The essence of the problem: I graduated from college with an IT specialty, now I continue at the institute (I studied according to the principle, if only I could pass the test). I worked for 2 years as a junior IT specialist and I'm going to continue (I'm looking for a job).
But. I have a hobby - music, so serious that I can't even call it a hobby. And I would be happy to deal only with her, if not in need of money. Yes, you can make money with music, but there is a very high entry threshold, I have every chance of becoming a professional. guitarist of the year in 2, but that doesn't mean I'll get a salary as a pro. programmer.
So at one time I did not take a steam bath, worked for 8 hours as an IT courier for 25k, came in the evening, studied guitar, took lessons from a teacher, spent more time on weekends. And now I sit and understand (when there is no work, there is a lot of time to think) that I can’t always get 25k, I need to somehow grow in career and financial terms, but I don’t have many skills. When it was time to acquire skills, I carelessly blew this opportunity. And now if I decide, for example, "I need to get serious about web programming", then here you can put = "I need to stop playing music."
So here are a couple of questions:
1. Is it possible now to find a job with small requirements, but with opportunities to develop on the spot and grow career and financially? (This was not at my last job) I suppose to roll into the administration.
2. Who also has serious hobbies, tell us how you manage to keep up "both here and there"? After all, someone programmed / administrated at work, came home and didn’t need anything - the day didn’t live in vain, you can watch a movie with your wife, and my second job begins (difficult, but pleasant)

@Maronus

you can watch a movie with your wife

It turns out that in your opinion wasted time?) But it's true, the post is not about that.
Can.
We build a simple logical chain: in order to earn well, you need to work well; in order to work well, you need to become a professional; .
A person's time resources are extremely limited, therefore it is extremely difficult to become a professional everywhere, and sometimes even impossible.
Therefore, I would advise you to choose one thing, and develop entirely and completely in this direction.
But what to choose (IT or music) depends specifically on your situation.
Do you already have a family or is it planned in the near future? If so, then you will need to provide for this family. Will music be able to give the right amount of money in the near future? And in the future? Do you adequately assess your strengths in music? Wouldn't it turn out that the family will be in 10 years (for example), and in music you earned, say, 25-30k, and you won't go further? How do you feel about IT? Are you ready to devote a lot of time to this area, or is it just a way to get more money with little effort?
First of all, think not about your current desires and interests, but about your future. Will you be able to provide for your family, children, parents in the end? Pensions are cheap, education is getting more expensive every year .. IMHO, start only from this factor. Will you be able to earn enough through music in N years? Quit IT. You really like music, but there are no special salary prospects? Keep it as a hobby.

choose one thing
, the more a person earns, the more free time he has,
that is, you work 8 hours
8 hours indulge in a hobby
and sleep for 8 hours completely.

I have been working in IT for a long time, I have been fond of music since childhood.
I won't say that I had a similar problem, I immediately decided for myself that I would have to leave music as a hobby, and not have illusions about the "big stage".
In fact: I come home from work and play according to my mood (either synth, or electric guitar with overdrive, or acoustics). I can't imagine myself without music.
So you have to make a strong-willed decision what to leave as a hobby, and what as a means of earning.

I left music as a hobby. Sometimes I write something, I publish it on a label.

Many of my fellow programmers, having reached a decent level for the money, began to work 2 hours a day. The rest of the time is devoted to hobbies and entertainment. Hobbies are usually very expensive.
For example, not just music, but its own rehearsal base, its own recording studio, its own equipment for shooting video clips (where each video camera costs $ 8,000)....
