How do you approach self-education?

I am interested in the process of organizing knowledge as an activity.
Let's say you come across a new area surrounded by a high entry barrier. Your previous experience is a weak learning aid, or maybe not at all.
How do you organize yourself, your day, where do you start. What do you do if a textbook, book, manual, documentation, people themselves are far from easy to understand and require a certain background, WHICH you are not even aware of. That is, I mean the situation when you take the material and, as an inexperienced person, who has not gone through the entire chain of knowledge, gaining experience cannot simply understand what skills you need, what you should have become familiar with before.

The title and the content of the question itself are somewhat different, in my opinion.
A new topic is always studied gradually, from the basics and from conversations with specialists.
And the process of self-education is organized systematically. For example, I have two hours of time a day when I read something new on the subject or watch a video (mostly Coursera lately)

I use the following approaches in learning something new:
1) Overview of technology, search for alternatives, comparison, classification
2) Selection of the source of information (websites bookmarked, books bought / downloaded)
3) Learning in a spiral - a quick, shallow passage through the entire technology (reading short articles, thin books), and if you are interested further, then in-depth study.

Я понимаю, о чем вопрос, но вот решение его до конца для себя не определила. Допустим, сейчас меня интересует вхождение в профессиональное программирование. Кое-какие навыки есть, но очень неорганизованные и по верхам. Образование - микроэлектроника, сто лет назад немного ТурбоПаскаля, немного С++, Mathcad, позднее немного VBA... на уровне написания парсеров для документов эксель. Но чувствую, что жутко плаваю, что не хватает знаний, а главное - их систематизации для участия в больших проектах. Решила плотно заняться этим делом, благо что очень нравится оно мне. Был выбран для освоения Python. Итак, прошла пару курсов на edx.org, coursera.org, занималась по тьюториалам, читала книги (правда, до фундаментального программирования типа Кнута пока так и не добралась), разбирала примеры. Продолжаю все это делать. Набрала в башку море информации и знаний. И что же? Воз и ныне там. Я теперь немного знаю Питон, немного умею на нем написать простенькую текстовую игрушку, сварганить сайт, но не чувствую уверенного владения основами, которое делает программиста программистом. Конечно, нужно практиковаться, нарабатывать опыт, но чтение некоторых источников (особенно теории) вводит меня в фрустрацию. Ох, это слишком сложно, наверное нужно начать с чего-то попроще. Но с чего? Где начало начал?
Очень хочется получить второе ВУЗовское образование, но по некоторым объективным причинам пока не потяну даже заочку. Но ведь по идее можно получать образование самостоятельно, без ВУЗа? Можно. Но как, с чего начать, чтобы не тонуть в море информации? Вот тоже пока никак не определюсь, замкнутый круг какой-то... поэтому топикстартера я понимаю.
