How do SMS number rental services work?

I'm thinking of making a service for renting numbers for SMS, but I can't find any information on the Internet, maybe someone knows how it works?

Answer 1

1) Connecting via SMPP protocol to an operator/intermediary
2) Buying/renting numbers
3) Then your service does what it wants - puts incoming sms into folders/database, sorts them by numbers/prefixes for your customers, sends them to your customers via sms/email/smpp/jabber etc.
More or less like this.
