How do I troubleshoot a remote access connection issue?

There is a server in the office on Windows Server 2008 R2, and I have Windows 7 on my computer. I try to connect via Remote Desktop Connection and when I enter the server's IP address in the field, an error occurs, but if I write in the word server, everything goes fine, what's the problem?

если писать в слово server то все идет нормально
You mean, log in under a domain name?

The IP address is not correct. What does the ping server answer?
