How do I connect my WD TV Live media player to my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop?

At home, three computers: one with Windows XP, another with Windows 7, and a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 are connected to the Internet via a D-link DIR-120 router. I must say right away that I am a complete “teapot” in organizing networks, everything was connected automatically through the router, so we will assume that this is my first experience. I would like to somehow (directly, or better through a router) connect a media player to a laptop in order to watch “heavy” HD video directly from its hard drive. I will also be grateful if you tell me (for general development) a similar way to connect to a computer with Windows 7. But a laptop is still a priority.

I think WD knows how to play movies from the network. You need to share the movie directory to the network (in Ubuntu, install samba), and add this directory to the player. It's easier than DLNA.

everything is solved by installing a dlna server on all computers, look here habrahabr.ru/qa/1857/ there are useful links there.

through SAMBA it works fine, i.e. shared folders. Or for alternative firmware there is NFS support.
