How can one count the number of characters in a Scala text?

There is a document that is stored in MongoDB as a text of type String with html tags. Is it possible to somehow count the number of characters in this string and put them in another column of the same database?
Judging by third-party sites, there are approximately 35,000 characters in the document, so the length() method is dropped.
