If we are talking about InplaceUpgrade (in-place upgrade without reinstallation), then there is a simple option:
In the registry, change the edition and product name to the ones you need:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"EditionID"="Professional"
"ProductName"="Windows 8.0 Professional"

- 8.0 or 8.1 depends on what is currently on the computer.
Start the installation from the distribution kit of the required edition, select the update with saving programs and data.
Won't work:
8.1 --> 8.0,
x86 --> x64 , x64 --> x86
As a result, you get a non-activated system, all updates need to be installed again. The variant is not officially supported. After the update,
it will not be superfluous to clean the disk, and then check the image. Procedure description: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824869.aspx

If you have a laptop - on the manufacturer's website back in the fall there were links to an update (Updated Asus and Acer).
Here it is for Acer laptops. Each manufacturer has its own tricks - for example, in order to upgrade to Win8, the laptop had to be purchased before August 28th.
If you are a student (student), the university or college may own a DreamSpark subscription - free software for students - more on this in the place of study.
