How can I just connect to a php script on a website and return a response?

The URL looks something like this:
edu. ... . ... /_apps/request.php?s=
+ keyword
I expect only one line in response. My problem is that despite the abundance of http request examples on the Internet, there is not a single one that can be safely copied and pasted. Often the methods and classes used in the examples are outdated and unsupported ideas, and for some there is no documentation at all.
Please help...
