How can I ignore certain folders when synchronizing a project?

Good afternoon, when adding a project from a remote server, I download only certain folders where there are no large files, or where there are not too many files (for example, node_modules), but when I click on the synchronization of the entire project with a remote server, the project starts to sort through all the files on remote server, even if I don't have such folders. How to be? So I understand the synchronization of the entire project is a very resource-intensive operation and should I synchronize only some specific folders in which I will work?
