How and where do design trends start?

I notice design trends only when their manifestation is already becoming a sign of secondary and bad taste.
Perhaps now the next trend is modestly lost among thousands of flat and long shadow logos with a mustache, and it will be possible to eat it only rotten.
How to stop chasing a trend by catching it? Work in a top studio and create trends yourself?
PS: I'm not a designer, so I apologize for the word "trend" if I use it incorrectly in relation to what is gaining popularity in the design world. There is probably a better term.
