From what books to absorb the basics of design?

Interested in design. Its foundations. Web design, ui/ux design, graphic design. Books are desirable for gaining a foundation and understanding of design principles that can be applied to any kind of design.

The conceptual principles are described in Art and Visual Perception by Arnheim. The knowledge from the book is applicable to photography, typography, design and visuals in general - the very basics.
The book is heavy, I read the pages several times. I don't know if the problem is translation or content - but be prepared.
