Freelancer.com took $40 milestone from me, and the customer disappeared immediately after I agreed to complete the task. How do I get my money back?

After I accepted the task, almost $40 was paid from my card to Freelancer.com.
But the customer has disappeared and does not get in touch. So I don’t even know what exactly I had to do for him.
As I understand it, the money just hangs on the site (but it’s not in my profile), but how can I return it and refuse the task?
I'm new to this business and I don't understand why I have to pay if I complete the task?
I really appreciate your help and answers.
Thank you!

Freelancer.com sucks. The most amazing thing is that you pay for the fact that you were given a task, this is generally the inadequacy of the first degree :)
