Forum engine for integration into an existing project

There is a small self-written project. I would like to attach a forum to it, but it is required that it be possible to integrate into the existing database, i.e. so that users are the same, avatars, some data. In particular, if a user logs in to the main site, then he automatically logs in to the forum. And the same for registration.

I don't like the idea of database synchronization, in particular, it's not clear how to transfer already active users.

Are there ready-made solutions? Are there session exchange mechanisms in the most popular forum engines?

Try SMF. As far as I know, it has a fairly advanced API.

Somehow I integrated PhpBB 3.xc LiveStreet 0.42-0.5 and Rus-PhpNuke in this way.
From the side of PhpBB, there was nothing very complicated, as I don’t know now.
