For what purposes does a programmer need computer science?

One often hears from different people from the IT sphere that a real programmer needs computer science, that without it he is nothing more than a coder.
This statement seems too abstract to me and I would like a little specifics, I think in such matters as the choice of knowledge, tools and other things, specifics, unfortunately, are necessary. So, what are some examples of problems that computer science can help solve directly at work?

PS I understand that specifics are the enemy of science when someone puts them above abstract concepts and knowledge (limits and does not allow asking questions on its basis), I'm not even talking about when a person "seems" self-affirms at the expense of a person "to be" on this one specifics. But when it comes to the above - it is needed.
