Empty menu bar on linux after update?

After the update, the menu bar became empty, i.e. open applications are not shown, extensions of the date / time type are gone. It also fails to add back, the list of extensions is empty.
Has anyone encountered such a problem? What to do?
Ubuntu 18.04.3LTS
