IANAL.
The GNU GPL, as well as any other free license, does not prohibit embedding advertising in an application as such.
However, any code used in the same product with GNU GPL code must be licensed under terms compatible with the GPL, so that the final product can and should be distributed under the GPL in its entirety.
As for AdMob, if I understand correctly, then it is licensed under the Apache License v2 (I emphasize - if , double-check this directly). And it is compatible with the GNU GPL v3, but incompatible with the GNU GPL v2.
