Does a novice system administrator need knowledge of Windows server?

Good day. I decided to retrain as system administrators, but I don’t know where to start. I noticed a trend that system administrators under Windows are not so in demand. And what is sad, every year it is more and more noticeable. Share your knowledge.

It depends on what you are going to administer.
System administrator is a very broad concept.
A system administrator can administer a network, a server, a database, deal with security, pull wires in the attic, refuel printers in the back room.

You are wrong. Windows system administrators are in demand, as are other specialists. The skill level matters. Someone can design an exchange for 500,000 messages a day.
PS Author, are you still here?
1. What area of IT do you want to work in? Microsoft or Linux?
2. Do you have a PC with 16 gb RAM?
3. Do you have a tablet?
4. I can share my subscriptions with you, what is your mail?
5. Most importantly, if you do change your field of activity, you will have to read a lot. It is worth reading literature from vendors or people associated with the vendor.
6. Online learning centers. There. Everyone teaches, some of them are quite high quality and for reasonable money.

Windows administrators are in demand and even very much, the main thing is to decide on specialization. In my opinion, the following areas can be distinguished:
1. Active Directory + related services (AD FS, AD RMS, GroupPolicy, etc.)
2. Communication - Exchange (mail service)\Lync Server (IP telephony, IM)
3. Data center administrators - SystemCenter + Hyper-V
4. Database administrators - MS SQL Server
5. SharePoint administrators - corporate portal from MS (knowledge of C# + HTML is also required here)
And start as usual with the basics - what is a forest, domain, etc.

Windows is designed to have as few configuration issues as possible for end users. As a result, all maintenance is reduced to office purposes and to eliminate problems to zero stupid users.
It's different with Unixes and Linuxes.

A beginner needs minimal knowledge in psychology - to communicate with users. And the ability to reinstall Windows.
It is better not to go into the servers for the first 2 years - the price of even the most insignificant mistake is very high there, which at first will be quite a lot.
