This is interesting in case you are thinking about where to go in the evening and notice some place from where there are most photos in the last hour, for example, which means there is something interesting there, like a cool concert or a city event. By the way, a search on Panoramio would also be interesting, it is usually used to photograph beautiful places and put them on Google maps.

It depends on what to look for, but it seems to me that Foursquare provides a similar service. As an end user, it would not matter to me on the basis of what data points of interest are marked.
