Do you have an example of a successful use of animation on a website? Particularly interested in animation on the main page with pluses and minuses. What kind of animation is better to use (gif svg etc)?

Yes, there are plenty of examples, at least a round "endless" progress bar that shows the loading status, you can make it as a GIF because it does not require control, and for "controlled", "final" animations, HTML5 & CSS3 is better, not necessarily canvas, for example "carousels" are also animated, but there is no need for them to be "custom" rendered, in general, any smooth change is an animation.
