Do Ubiquiti UniFi APs work without a software controller?

Will UniFi APs still or not work without a software controller?
Google gives conflicting answers to this question. Some write that the controller is needed only for configuration, others categorically state that the network will not work without a constantly running controller.
The question is relevant, since there is no server equipment in the office that would work all the time.
